MEXIco Restaurant opens in Maidstone

Earl Street is the place to go for a pick of restaurants in Maidstone and the latest eatery to open in this competitive market is ‘MEXIco’.  Having enjoyed a Mexican restaurant in town before, it is great to get this North American cuisine back on the Maidstone map.

‘MEXIco’ is not just a restaurant – this has opened as a bar as well offering a separate bar area for those who just want a drink – their range of cocktails is extensive and here is a place where tequila is taken seriously.

Ensuring customers eat authentic Mexican cuisine is hugely important in this restaurant and award winning US chef Johnny Hernandez has created the menu.  Jonny is a well respected chef and has cooked for VIP’s such as President Obama.  His menu brings something completely unique to Maidstone and we are lucky enough to have the MEXIco Puffy Taco on the menu – the first place in the UK to sell this Mexican dish.

Morag Freathy, Managing Director of MEXIco, said: “We are hugely excited about the new opening. MEXIco is going to be a magnificent addition to Maidstone, offering authentic, high-end Mexican cooking at high-street prices.

Working with the legendary Johnny Hernandez, who is probably the finest Mexican cuisine chef in America, to create MEXIco has been amazing. His menu will give guests a real taste of the rich variety that Mexican cuisine has to offer, a change from the usual standard dishes, and we have also created an exciting bar menu and cocktail list to compliment his creations.”

The food choices include a range of gluten free and vegetarian dishes with prices for starters ranging from £3.69 for dips, mains from approximately £8 and desserts from £3.49.  Our two roving reporters, David and Andy, sampled the salsa roja, salsa verde and Pico de Gallo with ground corn chips, chicken taquitos, fish baja, pork tostadas and the signature dish of Puffy Taco’s and recommend the food which they agree is home cooked and authentic.

Their house Mexican beer is ‘Dos Equis’ and the cocktail which impressed the most was the ‘Pacific Margarita’.  Apparently tequila is the new gin…

Morag told us they have opened in Maidstone because there is a wanted presence for Mexican food in the South East and Maidstone is a central location with friendly locals.

David and Andy enjoyed the food and atmosphere. With a warm welcome and positive vibe, ‘MEXIco’ is a great addition to Maidstone.  As a town which is a go to destination for a night out in Kent, the more choice of food and drink on offer in Maidstone the better!
